Latest Pop Culture Obsessions

The last few weeks have been pretty crazy. I produced weekly news packages on my own for class, kept up on freelancing and intern duties, and – a moment I’m pretty darn proud of – interviewed Imposters star Rob Heaps for Her Campus (and have another exciting potential interview in the works!).

After keeping busy quite consistently, my “spring” break this week was very welcomed and needed. Aside from applying to “real world” jobs, I don’t have much going on this week, so I’ve found the time to get obsessed with some new things!

CBS Sunday Morning profiles

After almost a full school year of analyzing packages and making my own, I suddenly discovered how the CBS Sunday Morning celebrity profiles tend to fit within my exact interests. A lot of the figures profiled are involved in theater or TV I enjoy. Once you’ve watched a few of these, there’s a specific formula found in each – red carpet footage with natural sound of the star’s name being called, old photos, a visit to someone’s childhood community theater. I really love the storytelling in these – writing is probably my favorite part of making packages, and good additional details that aren’t covered in the actual interview can make or break a package. Given that the Oscars are next week, I’ve included a recent package of Emma Stone that includes moments with two of her close friends and a visit to her old community theater.

Unreal on Lifetime

I remember trying to get into Unreal the first summer it aired, but ultimately lost track of it along the way. Now that I have a Hulu account (it’s so worth the money), I binged the first season within the first three days of my break. Yes, it has its light moments, but it also has so much subtle commentary on women in working environments and how they rely on each other, and it’s fun to see the extremes of how The Bachelor is possibly filmed. Also, maybe this is just me being naive, but it contains way more extreme stuff than I thought was allowed to air on Lifetime. It is probably the most indulgent show I watch, so it’s definitely a guilty pleasure, but you don’t feel like your brain is going to mush when you watch it. Fun fact: I just found out that the actor who plays Adam was Cormac McLaggen in the Harry Potter films, and he and the actress who plays Anna actually got married after first meeting on the show. Season 2 is streaming now, so I have even more watching to do!

“Times Are Hard for Dreamers” from Amelie

I’ve been pretty neutral toward the upcoming new musical Amelie. I thought all of the promo pictures were beautifully shot, but seeing it wasn’t really on my radar. Then this press event happened, giving a glimpse at some of the show’s songs, and I fell in love with the one above, “Times Are Hard for Dreamers.” Like, “got-stuck-in-my-head-all-day” in love. One of the lyricists, Nathan Tysen, is the same man who wrote songs for Tuck Everlasting, and I get the same upbeat but soulful vibes that the Tuck cast recording radiates from this music. I definitely recommend listening to the other songs that were previewed because they do make you feel happy, and we can all do with a little more of that.

What about you? What have you been obsessed with recently?
