I’m easing back into blogging by responding to another Top Ten Tuesday topic over at The Broke and the Bookish. I was in quite a writing stump after finishing school this year, but seeing this idea got the juices flowing again!

Normally, I am quite possessive over book adaptations and become very skeptical of them. I blame the fact that whenever books become movies their popularity skyrockets and I then feel like a slighted hipster who is disregarded simply because she read the book before its heyday or doesn’t want to read the book because everyone else is reading it. So essentially, if any of these books were to actually be on TV or film, I’d have to get my butt to that production site and ensure that my opinion is heard. No biggie, right?

1. Life After Life, by Kate Atkinson

I raved about this in my Favorite Books of 2014 post and I think that, if done right, it could be an amazing PBS/BBC miniseries. Bonus points if Jessica Raine is cast as Ursula and James McAvoy plays her father (we can age him up with makeup when the character is older, right?).

 2. Anne of the Island, by L.M. Montgomery

My dream adaptation of this will never happen, as my perfect casting involves Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie (rest in peace). I know the film Anne of Avonlea squishes together Books 2 through 4, but apart from catching a few bits of it when it aired regularly on PBS, I’ve never seen it and don’t really want to see it. The third book is so special to me that nothing could ever live up to my vision of it. Knowing that Season 2 of Green Gables Fables will cover the book’s events makes the wound a little better, but that’s still a modern retelling as opposed to the real thing.

3. Mr. Churchill’s Secretary, by Susan Elia MacNeal

Yet another book where I pictured Jessica Raine as the main character (probably during the peak of my Call the Midwife viewing, plus her look just fits the 1940s perfectly). This would be an awesome thriller TV series a la Agent Carter. This is also the first in a series, so perhaps a season per book?! And on Netflix so I can watch it all at once?!

4. Second Chance Summer, by Morgan Matson

This book’s possibilities as a film are too perfect to ignore. I see it falling into the lines of being a summer blockbuster with an amount of tear-inducing moments equal to The Fault in Our Stars. An incomparable actor would have to play Taylor’s dad, as I feel that he really carries the emotional weight of the story (I pictured Philip Seymour Hoffman when I read it, but, you know).

5. The Weird Sisters, by Eleanor Brown

I’ve mentioned before how connected I became to this story and how I would refuse to see a film adaptation unless Amy Adams, Rebecca Mader, and Jessica Chastain played the sisters (can you see why I would need to be on those film sets yet?). Honestly, if Amy and Jessica play sisters in any movie, I can die happy.

6. Any Sarah Dessen book 

I’m partial to This Lullaby and Along for the Ride. Both would be great summer movies and could garner a huge audience – I don’t think I’ve met a girl who’s never read at least one Dessen book. And come on, we all know that Mandy Moore movie where they put two books together doesn’t really count as a Dessen adaptation.

7. Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry

I read this for the first time in fifth grade English class. Now looking back, it was probably the first Holocaust story I ever read. As a film, this could be marketed towards educating young children or more towards giving adults a new perspective of this time period. Either way, I think it could be a brilliant story to tell through film.
